This large family with 5 children were referred to us in October last year. Mum has been struggling with postnatal depression. Mum received the support of a home-visiting volunteer who she quickly developed a trusting relationship with. Due to Mum feeling very isolated the volunteer supported Mum and her younger children to attend our playgroup sessions.
Support given
Mum felt that her mental health was dipping when she came to us for support and therefore requested both home visiting and playgroup support from her volunteer – who accompanied Mum for the first few sessions.
Mum feels that she now feels very comfortable at playgroup and has made friends with the other parents and therefore would benefit more from her volunteer supporting her in the home. Mum’s confidence has increased, which has enabled her to attend playgroup with volunteer support. Mum attended our Easter Event at the Puddle and her and the children really enjoyed it. Mum socialized with the other parents, and this helped to improve Mum’s wellbeing and made her feel less isolated.
Outcomes
Mum now receives twice weekly support from Home Start group and volunteer home visits, and she also receives regular support calls with her Family Support Coordinator. Mum feels that this is really helping her to feel less isolated and providesa structure for her week that really benefits her mental health.
Mum has commented that “It has made me feel better being around other Mums and families to know they are in similar position to me. It’s nice not to feel judged and nice to be around other people and meet new people. Sometimes I hold back and struggle to trust people and it’s so nice to have the opportunity to join the Mum’s whats app group and get asked to go to the park after playgroup.”
